New Alliance-Only LFG Chat Now Available!

March 23, 2012 Posted by Eldacar

Given the overwhelming support for the idea of of splitting the chat into faction specific channels I have decided to take action. However the risk here to the alliance is still quite high, so this initial step will be a small one. What I have decided to do is keep the existing channel as it is, shared between both factions and there for anyone and everyone to use. I am adding an alliance-only channel to supplement it and give the heavily out numbered alliance players a place they can go to LFG without sorting through mountains of horde chat.

What this means is that horde players will keep using the chat as before, but alliance players can now use both channels to LFG, or just one if they prefer. There may come a time that I will split the channels entirely, but for now this is the way it will be. Both chats can be accessed via the top navigation bar, or via the big button in the right hand column which will now take you to a channel select page before taking you to you to the chat.

If the new alliance chat is to be successful it will need alliance players supporting and promoting it. So if you are alliance please tell your friends, guildies, server, everyone you know who can make use of it. It is bound to be slow for a while, be patient with it and try to stick around even if there is nothing going on. Simply idling in there and making casual conversation when someone new joins will make new users much more likely to stick around and participate.

Should LFG chat be split into faction channels?

March 21, 2012 Posted by Eldacar

Since LFG Chat was started I have received many requests to split the chat into separate channels for the alliance and horde. So far I have been reluctant do it for a few reasons, but I am considering doing it now and am looking for user input on the decision. Right now the biggest issue is that there are not nearly as many alliance users as horde users, as a result the alliance chat would likely be significantly less active. While I am sure many alliance players like the idea of having their own channel and not feeling like a small minority there is significant risk involved.

Things like LFG chat need a certain number of users in order to operate, a critical mass so to speak. If players come to the channel and see only a handful of people in it and not much activity they are significantly less likely to stick around and attempt to participate in it. Right now alliance users may be a minority, but when a new alliance player comes to the chat they at least see other players and lots of activity, even if most of it is the wrong faction. The big risk here is that if the factions are split into separate channels the alliance channel may not have enough active users to function, and it may die entirely. If the split does occur there will need to be a lot of alliance players aggressively spreading the word about the channel and getting their friends to use it if it is to have any real chance of survival.

Is this a risk worth taking? Is this something that everyone wants to try? Let me know what you all think.

LFG List Beta is now Available!

March 19, 2012 Posted by Eldacar

I am happy to announce that thanks in large part to the hard work of my friend and fellow MVP Cyaga/Binarymuse a beta version of the new LFG List tool is now available for use! You can access the list by using the link over in the right hand column or by visiting battlemasters.org/lfglist.php. The LFG list is a live-updating listing of US players that are currently LFG for rated BG’s. It is designed to be used in conjunction with the LFG IRC Chat to help players find and form groups.

If you are LFG simply follow the directions below and add yourself to the list. if you are LFM browse the list for a player that meets your needs and then contact them in the IRC chat, you can view player armory profiles simply by clicking on their name in the list. Currently listings will last for one hour and then expire, you can refresh/bump your listing by adding yourself again, the list will also update in real-time with no need to refresh the page. The list is currently limited to US players at max level, however we may expand it to serve EU players and twinks in the future once we have things running well.

The list is still in early beta and has many new features planned for the future including a more robust filtering and searching system, it is also likely to have a bug or two here and there. Please bear with us as we develop this new service, this site is free of charge with no advertising and is run entirely by volunteers, so there are limits to how much we can do and how fast we can do it, but we will do our best to get any issues resolved as quickly as we can. If you run into any issues with this page or have suggestions for improvement, you can submit them to feedback@battlemasters.org.

How to add yourself to the LFG List:

  1. Enter your Realm and Character names.
  2. Your character info is retrieved from the armory and displayed for you to verify.
  3. Change your main and off spec if necessary and add your IRC name so players know who to contact in chat. (Notes are currently not functioning)
  4. Click “Add Me to the List!”, and you will immediatly be listed for one hour.

Known Issues:

  • There is currently no way to remove yourself from the list other than letting your listing expire after an hour.
  • There is currently no way to update your listing if you made a mistake while submitting it other than letting it expire and reposting it.
  • Sorting by highest rank currently displays incorrect results.

I hope you all enjoy this new feature, again if you have any comments, feedback, or bug reports regarding the LFG List please submit them to feedback@battlemasters.org.
